Sew this cute baby bodysuit in a few hours even if you’re a beginner

Make this cute baby bodysuit in just a couple of hours — even if you’re a beginner sewist

Do you want to create something adorable, handmade, and EASY for a new baby gift?

I’m going to show you how you can make this fun project in just a few hours, even if you're brand new to sewing.

I made four of these sweet baby bodysuits in multiple prints and colors for the babies in my life from a fantastic printable pattern that made this project a breeze.

What you’ll need for your baby bodysuit project

Getting started with your baby bodysuit project

Before we dive into the details, let me introduce you to the essentials you'll need for this DIY adventure.

First and foremost, you'll want to grab the easy baby bodysuit pattern I found on Etsy from Jaykaiy.

This pattern is a game-changer, designed with beginners in mind, so you won't feel overwhelmed.

It comes with step-by-step instructions that will guide you through the entire process.

Choosing the perfect fabric for your bodysuit

Now, let's talk fabric!

For this project, I highly recommend using Organic Cotton Knit fabric from Spoonflower.

Not only is it incredibly soft, ensuring maximum comfort for the baby, but it's also durable enough to withstand repeated washings – a crucial feature for baby clothes.

I chose assorted prints in the medium scale from my Wild Autumn fabric collection.

These charming prints were just perfect for my sweet friend Jasmin’s baby boy, Colter and my niece, Sam.

How save money by ordering two designs on one yard of fabric

You’ll need about 1/2 yard of fabric for each bodysuit. The easiest way to do this is by using the Vertical Split Yard in Spoonflower’s Fill-A-Yard feature. It allows you to split 1 yard of organic cotton knit between two designs.

  2. Watch the video below to learn how to select and order your designs.

I ordered two split vertical yards with these four patterns:

Spoonflower’s Organic Cotton Knit fabric is so soft and stands up to repeated washings — a must when you have little ones! I sewed multiple bodysuits (with fabric from my Wild Autumn collection) at the same time. Jaykaiy’s baby bodysuit pattern made it so easy!

Steps to crafting your baby bodysuit

  1. Gather Your Materials: Alongside the pattern and fabric, you'll need some basic sewing supplies, such as scissors, pins, a sewing machine, and coordinating thread. (If you need help arranging pattern pieces on the fabric, or just general sewing knowledge, I highly recommend this book, the Reader’s Digest Complete Guide to Sewing. )

  2. Wash your fabric: Give your new fabric a quick wash to let it shrink before sewing and soften the fabric. You might want to use a fragrance-free detergent like All Free & Clear to keep the fabric from irritating baby’s sensitive skin.

  3. Print and Cut Out the Pattern: Follow the pattern instructions to print, assemble, and cut out the fabric pieces for your desired size. Jaykaiy makes it so easy to follow with her concise directions and photos!

  4. Sew the Bodysuit: The pattern will walk you through stitching the bodysuit together. Don't be intimidated; take your time, and you'll see how quickly it comes together. If you have a serger, it will help keep the seams from fraying and your project will go even faster! But you can certainly use your normal machine with an overlock foot.

  5. Add Snaps or Buttons: Depending on the pattern, you will want to add snaps or buttons for easy diaper changes. These are typically straightforward to attach with a snap tool like this one.

  6. Final Touches: Once your bodysuit is sewn and any closures are added, give it a final press with an iron if you’d like.

I ended up making 4 bodysuits and 2 bandanas out of my Wild Harvest fabric collection. They were so fun to create!

Why this handmade baby bodysuit makes the perfect gift

Now, here's the exciting part – the end result! These dear sweet babes, Colter and Sam, look absolutely precious in the bodysuits I made using this very pattern and the prints from the Wild Autumn Collection.

This baby bodysuit pattern makes a unique, useful, and heartfelt gift that truly stands out. Plus, it's something that parents and babies alike will appreciate because it's handmade with love.

Fun fact: Colter and Sam were born on the same DAY to my friend Jasmin and my sister Sarah, respectively! It’s been so fun to watch them reach their milestones at the same time.
