Peel and Stick Wallpaper Installation Guide

Peel and Stick is the most approachable of the four wallpaper substrates Pine + Feather Studio offers. It requires no paste, no water trays, and no professional experience. If you can hang a large sticker with care and patience, you can hang peel and stick wallpaper. This guide walks you through everything you need to know before you begin.

Is Peel and Stick Right for Your Project?

Peel and Stick is a smart choice for renters, accent walls, short-term installations, and anyone who wants a commitment-free result. It is designed for smooth, flat surfaces and low to moderate traffic areas. It is fully removable within one year of installation. After one year the adhesive bond strengthens and removal is still possible but may require minor wall touch-up.

Peel and Stick is not recommended for:

  • Textured, rough, or uneven walls
  • High-moisture environments such as bathrooms or steamy kitchens
  • Walls painted with washable, scrubbable, or No-VOC paints (the anti-stick properties of these paints work against wallpaper adhesion)
  • Walls painted less than 30 days ago
  • Cement, brick, or porous masonry surfaces

If your project involves high-traffic or commercial use, a permanently wallpapered bathroom, or a wall that needs to last more than a year without attention, consider our Non-Pasted Traditional Paper or Commercial Vinyl substrate instead.

What You Will Need

  • Sharp utility or box-style knife with fresh blades (change blades frequently)
  • Squeegee or hard plastic smoother tool
  • Metal straight edge or ruler
  • Level and pencil for marking a plumb line
  • Step stool or ladder
  • Clean, dry cloths

Before You Order

Order a swatch first. Color and scale read differently on screen than on a wall, and every order is printed just for you. Testing the adhesive on a small section of your wall before committing to full panels is also strongly recommended, especially if you are unsure about your paint finish.

Wall Preparation

Wall preparation is the single most important factor in a successful peel and stick installation. Adhesion problems almost always trace back to a wall surface that was not properly prepped.

Paint and primer

Eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss paint finishes are preferred. Do not install over washable, scrubbable, or No-VOC paints. If you are not sure what finish your walls are painted in, test a small panel in an inconspicuous area first. Painted or primed walls must dry for at least 30 days before installation.

Surface preparation

Walls must be smooth, clean, dry, and free of mold, mildew, grease, and stains. On new construction, drywall joints should be taped, mudded, and sanded smooth. Fill and sand any nail holes, gouges, or surface imperfections. Remove all existing wallcovering before installing new panels, and ensure the residual moisture content of the wall is below 4%.

Acclimation

Allow your wallpaper panels to acclimate in the room where they will be installed for at least 24 hours before hanging. The ideal acclimation environment is 70°F to 75°F (21°C to 24°C) at 40 to 55% relative humidity. Before opening panels, inspect for correct scale, color match between panels, and any print defects.

Installation

Step 1 — Mark a plumb line

Use a level and pencil to mark a perfectly vertical line on the wall where your first panel will go. Walls and door frames are rarely perfectly plumb. Starting from a true vertical line prevents panels from drifting out of alignment as you work across the wall.

Step 2 — Peel and position the first panel

Starting at the top of the panel, peel away approximately 6 inches (15 cm) of the backing liner. Fold the liner flat backward (crease the liner, not the printed face). Allow 1 to 2 inches of extra panel above your wall line for trimming. Position the exposed adhesive against your plumb line and press lightly to tack it in place.

Step 3 — Smooth and work downward

Starting from the center of the panel, use a squeegee or hard smoother to press the panel to the wall in small 4 to 6 inch segments, working outward to the edges to release air. Do not rush. Work methodically downward, peeling the backing in small sections as you go. Smooth each section before exposing the next.

Step 4 — Reposition if needed

Peel and Stick can be repositioned during installation. If a panel goes on crooked or a bubble forms that will not smooth out, slowly peel the paper back from the wall and reapply. Do not yank or pull sharply.

Step 5 — Align additional panels

Align each subsequent panel to match the pattern repeat, overlapping by approximately 1/2 inch (1 cm) over the previous panel. A slight overlap seam will be visible after installation. This is normal and by design. Do not attempt to butt seams or trim panels for a seamless join — peel and stick is an overlap-install substrate.

Step 6 — Trim edges

Once all panels are hung, use a sharp utility knife and metal straight edge to trim along ceiling lines, baseboards, window frames, and corners. Change knife blades frequently. A dull blade drags and tears rather than cutting cleanly.

Removal

Start at a top corner and slowly peel the panel away from the wall at a low angle. Pulling too sharply or at a steep angle increases the risk of paint damage. If the adhesive has hardened after a long installation, gentle warmth from a hair dryer on a low setting can help soften the bond before peeling.

Care and Maintenance

Peel and Stick wallpaper can be gently cleaned with a lightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, heavy scrubbing, or excessive moisture near seams.
