Pre-Pasted Wallpaper Installation Guide
Pre-Pasted Wallpaper Installation Guide
Pre-Pasted wallpaper is a water-activated substrate designed for easy DIY installation with no separate paste required. It is a strong choice for bedrooms, nurseries, rental spaces, and any permanent or semi-permanent residential installation where the goal is a clean, professional result without the complexity of traditional hanging paste. This guide covers pre-pasted wallpaper installation from wall prep and priming through booking, hanging, and removal.
Is Pre-Pasted Right for Your Project?
Pre-Pasted is a versatile substrate well suited to most residential wall applications. It installs cleanly on smooth, properly primed walls, is fully removable, and is mold and mildew resistant, making it a good choice for bedrooms and living spaces that see regular use.
Pre-Pasted is best for:
- Bedrooms, nurseries, living rooms, and dining rooms
- Rental spaces where eventual removal is needed
- DIY installers comfortable working with water-activated adhesive
- Short-term or long-term residential use
Pre-Pasted is not recommended for:
- High-moisture environments such as bathrooms or steamy kitchens
- Textured or uneven wall surfaces
- Commercial or high-traffic spaces (consider Commercial Vinyl for those applications)
- Walls that have not been properly primed and cured
What You Will Need
- Roman PRO-977 Ultra Primer (two coats, applied at least four weeks before installation)
- 3/8" nap paint roller or high-output spray bottle for activating adhesive
- Non-abrasive soft cellulose sponge
- Sharp utility or box-style knife with fresh blades
- Soft plastic smoother and/or brush smoother
- Seam roller
- Metal straight edge or ruler
- Level and pencil for marking a plumb line
- Drop cloths, clean buckets, paint trays
- Step stool or ladder
Before You Order
Order a swatch first. Color and scale read differently on screen than on a wall, and every order is printed just for you. Testing the material in your specific environment before committing to full panels is always worthwhile.

Wall Preparation
Proper wall preparation is critical for a clean, long-lasting result. Pre-Pasted wallpaper requires primed walls, and the primer must cure fully before you hang a single panel.
Priming
Apply two coats of Roman PRO-977 Ultra Primer at a coverage rate of 400 to 450 square feet per gallon. Allow each coat to dry overnight. After the second coat, allow the walls to cure for at least four weeks before hanging wallpaper. Installing over uncured primer can cause bubbling as moisture tries to escape through the wall surface.
Surface preparation
Walls must be smooth, clean, dry, and free of mold, mildew, grease, and stains. On new construction, drywall joints should be taped, mudded, and sanded smooth. Fill and sand any nail holes, gouges, or surface imperfections. Remove all existing wallcovering before installing new panels, and ensure the residual moisture content of the wall is below 4%.
Acclimation
Allow your wallpaper panels to acclimate in the room where they will be installed before hanging. The ideal acclimation environment is 50°F to 77°F (10°C to 25°C) at 50 to 60% relative humidity. Before opening panels, inspect for correct scale, color match between panels, and any print defects.
How to Install Pre-Pasted Wallpaper: Overview
Pre-pasted wallpaper is designed to make installation accessible without sacrificing a professional result. This guide walks through every step of the prepasted wallpaper installation process — from priming your walls to trimming your final panel — so you know exactly what to expect before you begin.
Step 1 — Mark a plumb line
Use a level and pencil to mark a perfectly vertical line on the wall where your first panel will go. Walls and door frames are rarely perfectly plumb. Starting from a true vertical line prevents panels from drifting out of alignment as you work across the wall.
Step 2 — Activate the adhesive
Using a clean paint roller or sponge, thoroughly wet the back of the first panel. Alternatively, use a high-output spray bottle to saturate the adhesive evenly. Check the back of the panel under good overhead light — dry spots will appear dull. Pay particular attention to the edges, which commonly need a second pass. Every inch of the back should be evenly saturated before hanging.
Step 3 — Book the panel
Fold the panel loosely in on itself (adhesive side to adhesive side, printed face out) without creasing. This is called booking. Allow the panel to book for 3 to 5 minutes. Booking lets the adhesive activate and the paper relax before it meets the wall. Do not crease the material during booking, as creases may not disappear after hanging.
Step 4 — Hang and smooth
Unfold the top half of the booked panel and position it at the top of the wall, allowing 1 to 2 inches above the ceiling line for trimming. Align to your plumb line. Using a hard smoother, work out air pockets and bubbles from the center outward to the edges. Small bubbles will dissipate on their own as the panel dries.
Step 5 — Align additional panels
Align each subsequent panel to match the pattern repeat, overlapping by approximately 1/2 inch (1 cm) over the previous panel. A slight overlap seam will be visible after installation. Use a seam roller to press seams flat. Stop immediately if panels show a color mismatch and contact us before continuing.
Step 6 — Trim edges
Once all panels are hung, use a sharp utility knife and metal straight edge to trim along ceiling lines, baseboards, window frames, and corners. Change knife blades frequently. A dull blade drags and tears rather than cutting cleanly.
A note on double-cutting
Pre-Pasted can be double-cut for a seamless finish, but this technique is recommended for professional installers only and requires a different activator product. If you are working with a professional installer and would like more information about this option, contact the studio.
Removal
Pre-Pasted wallpaper is fully removable. Wet the panel surface with warm water using a sponge or spray bottle, allow it to soak in briefly to soften the adhesive, then peel slowly from a corner. Work in sections, keeping the surface damp as you go.
Care and Maintenance
Pre-Pasted wallpaper can be gently cleaned with a lightly damp soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, heavy scrubbing, or soaking near seams. The mold and mildew resistant construction makes it durable in typical residential environments.
