Bold Wallpaper Accent Wall: Shop This Renter Bedroom
Stacie HumpherysYes, you can do a bold wallpaper accent wall in a rental. Choose a removable peel & stick pattern, put it on one smooth wall whose paint has cured, and style the rest of the room with pieces that leave with you when the lease is up. Here is exactly that, in my Winter Moss colorway.
One wall, done properly, is enough to make a Boomer Beige or Millenial Gray rental feel like it's actually home. Here is a small bedroom built around one bold wallpaper accent wall in my Winter Moss colorway, styled with pieces that all move out with you when the lease is up.

Start on your wall, not your screen. A color shifts between your morning light and your lamps at night, so get a real swatch up before you commit to a roll. It is $12, it ships free, and afterward we email you a $20 credit toward your rolls, which covers it and then some. Order a Winter Moss swatch.

- Cream tufted headboard, queen, $74.99. Adjustable height, so it works with whatever bed frame you already own.
- Rattan and cane nightstand, $39.99. The room above uses two of these. Light wood and cane keep the pattern from feeling heavy.
- Cordless brass wall sconces, set of two, $45.59. Rechargeable, remote-controlled, magnetic bulbs. No wiring and no electrician: each one hangs on a single small screw, the kind of hole a dab of spackle closes in a minute. Bedside sconces are a particularly good move in a small rental because they free up the nightstand. If you want zero holes, search "peel and stick wall sconce" instead, though the adhesive versions are rated a little lower.
- Plug-in rattan pendant, $42.90. It plugs into an outlet and hangs from a hook, so you get a real light fixture without having to hard wire anything. Rotating dimmer on the cord, bulb included.
- Washable ivory rug, 8x10, $92.99. Machine washable, which can be a lifesaver in a rental, especially with pets. Size up to the 8x10: a queen bed is 60 inches wide, so a 5x7 is exactly as wide as the mattress and vanishes underneath it. The 8x10 leaves you about 18 inches of rug on each side. If your room is larger, the same rug comes in 9x12 for $139.99.
- Prewashed linen-look duvet cover, queen, $32.99. Oatmeal, soft, and it looks even cozier when it's rumpled.
- Olive linen fringe lumbar pillow cover, $22.99. One color note, pulled straight out of the wallpaper.
- Ivory linen curtains, 96 inch, $27.98. Hang them high and let them touch the floor. It's the cheapest way to make a low ceiling read taller.
- No-drill tension curtain rod, $41.99. Adjustable to 144 inches and it leaves nothing behind.
- Woven abaca basket, $42.90. Blankets, laundry, the pile of things with no home.
- Ceramic bud vases, set of three, $20.99. Grocery store stems are fine. That's the whole secret.
Common questions
Can you do a wallpaper accent wall in a rental?
Yes. Removable wallpaper, either peel & stick or pre-pasted, goes on one wall and comes back off without damaging the paint, as long as the paint has cured for about 30 days and the wall is smooth. Most leases allow it. If yours is unclear, ask, and send the install guide along with your question.
How much wallpaper do I need for one accent wall?
Our rolls are 2 ft wide by 12 ft high. A feature panel behind the bed, roughly 6.5 ft wide, takes about 4 rolls. A full 12 ft wall floor to ceiling takes about 6. The calculator on any product page works out the exact count for your wall.
Will a bold pattern make a small bedroom feel smaller?
Not on one wall. A single accent wall in a mid-scale pattern adds depth, and a cream ground like Winter Moss keeps it feeling open. Keep the other three walls and most of the furniture soft and neutral, and the room reads calm rather than busy.
Will the accent wall come off cleanly when I move?
Peel & stick peels from a top corner at a low angle, and a little heat from a hair dryer softens the adhesive. Pre-pasted wets with warm water and peels away. Both are made to come off clean on cured, smooth paint.
