Sports Themed Wallpaper & Bedroom: How One Collection Grew from Leggings to a Luxury Hotel
Stacie HumpherysSome collections start with a clear vision. This one started with a children's clothing request and ended with a luxury hotel commission.

The Unexpected Inspiration: Leatherheads
Before the first sketch was drawn, there was a movie.
Leatherheads — the 2008 romantic comedy starring George Clooney, John Krasinski, and Renée Zellweger — has some of the most gorgeous production design I've ever seen in a sports film. The sepia newsroom offices. The wool uniforms. The leather helmets with no face guards and absolute confidence. Every frame looked like a hand-tinted photograph from 1925.
That visual world lived in the back of my mind for years. When Alpine Baby Co. reached out asking for a vintage American football print for her children's leggings line, it came rushing forward. This wasn't going to be a jersey-and-football-number pattern. This was going to feel like it came from that world.

Starting Point: Retro Rivals for Alpine Baby Co.
The first print we created was "Retro Rivals," designed specifically for Alpine Baby Co.'s adventure leggings collection. Illustrated by hand, it drew on the graphic language of early 20th-century sports programs: players in leather helmets, the loose gestural energy of pre-modern game illustration.
She loved it. And honestly, so did we. The print had something most sports patterns don't. It felt like it had lived somewhere before.

The Moodboard That Changed Everything
After delivering Retro Rivals, we kept coming back to the design. There was clearly more to explore.
We started pulling a moodboard, not for fabric, but for a room. A boy's bedroom anchored in the visual world of early American football. Warm sepia tones. Dark navy. The texture of worn leather and aged newsprint. Nothing neon. Nothing branded. Something a kid could grow up in and not want to leave.
The moodboard made the direction undeniable. This collection needed wallpaper.

Part of the research took me to the archives in Butte, Montana, my hometown, where I spent an afternoon digging through photographs and ephemera from the 1920s football era. Butte had a surprisingly rich sports culture in that period, and the images I found there made their way directly into the illustration style of Vintage Playbook: worn game programs, team portraits with that particular flat, formal composition of early photography, the texture of newsprint that had been folded and unfolded a hundred times. There's something different about drawing from primary sources rather than Pinterest. The design carries that specificity even if a viewer can't name exactly why.

Building the Interior Collection
What started as a single fabric print became a full interior suite, each piece designed to work as a coordinated system. Here's what grew out of that first moodboard.
Vintage Playbook Wallpaper
The hero of the collection. A toile de jouy-inspired wallpaper featuring hand-illustrated vintage football players and actual historical play diagrams, printed in sepia on an off-white ground.
The toile format was a deliberate choice. Figures arranged in vignettes across a pale ground give it the visual vocabulary of a classic interior print rather than a sports novelty. It can live in a boy's bedroom, a study, a sports bar, or even a luxury hotel.

Stadium Stripes Lumbar Pillow
The field itself, rendered as a pillow. This 36 x 14 lumbar throw features a clean graphic of a football field: yard lines, hash marks, and numbers printed in cream on a slate grey or warm gold ground. Where the rest of the collection tells a story, this one sets the stage. It's the coordinate that says everything without saying too much, and it works just as well on a game room sofa as it does at the foot of a bed.
- 36 x 14 inches, standard lumbar size
- Available in slate grey and warm tan colorways

What Makes This Sports Themed Wallpaper Different
Most sports-themed wallpaper is graphic and literal: jersey numbers, team logos, flat color. Vintage Playbook takes a different approach.
The toile format gives it the visual structure of a classic interior print. The illustration style has genuine patina. The players look like they stepped out of a 1925 program because they were drawn that way. The play diagrams are real. The sepia palette ties it to a specific aesthetic world rather than a generic "sports" category.
That combination of illustration with historical grounding, classic format, and interior-quality materials is what we were chasing from the beginning. And it's what caught the attention of the next chapter of this collection's story.
From Spoonflower to a Luxury Hotel Commission
After uploading the collection to Spoonflower, we were discovered by a luxury interior design firm working on a high-end hospitality project. They commissioned a custom adaptation of the Vintage Playbook wallpaper, along with an entirely new companion piece, for a project we're not yet able to share publicly.
What we can say: the collection that started with a children's leggings print is now going into the walls of a landmark hospitality property. More details coming soon.
On Designing Custom Toile Wallpaper for Interiors
The toile format is one of the most versatile structures in wallpaper design. It scales beautifully from a powder room to a full hotel corridor, layers well with solid coordinates, and when the subject matter is right, carries genuine weight in a space.
If you're an interior designer or hospitality client looking for custom toile wallpaper built around a specific theme, team, institution, or story, that's exactly the kind of work we take on at Pine & Feather Studio. Every commission starts with a conversation about the narrative you want the space to hold.
